Portmeirion was founded in 1960 by designer Susan Williams-Ellis and her husband Euan Cooper-Willis. Portmeirion Pottery began when the couple purchased two small pottery companies and joined them to form Portmeirion Pottery. The factory in Stoke-On-trent that began manufacturing Susan’s designs over forty years ago is still used today by Portmeirion to manufacture some of their most popular products. Susan's early Portmeirion designs included the Malachite (1960) and Moss Agate (1961) patterns. Neither was produced in large quantities, however, both received high critical acclaim. These were followed by an unusually bright and floral pattern (Rose and Tiger Lily), and then came the iconic Totem design, which brought Portmeirion to the forefront of the British pottery industry. In the 1970’s, Portmeirion’s most recognised design, Botanic Garden, was released. It is still manufactured today and proves to be as popular as ever. Portmeirion continue to manufacture these classic designs from Susan Williams-Ellis, and also now produce designs from celebrated designer Sophie Conran, including her ‘Celadon’ and ‘White’ ranges. China Chaps now sell all current Portmeirion tableware ranges in our Snodland store.
