Spode was established by Thomas Spode in 1770 in Stoke-On-Trent, Staffordshire. Spode made two great achievements that would redefine the pottery industry. The first was the perfection of blue under glaze printing. This came from Spode as a response to the fact that Chinese porcelain decorated in blue and white became harder to obtain due to exporting costs. So, in 1784 Spode developed a technique of transfer printing designs engraved on copper plates. This led to the still iconic Blue Italian pattern being introduced in 1816. Spode also, after much experimentation, perfected the recipe for fine bone china. Spode created a fine bone china that was brilliant white and translucent, and had the look of being delicate but was incredibly strong. Spode is still primarily manufactured in Stoke-on-Trent under the Portmeirion group.
